EUPHEMISMS

Written on February 1st, 2010
[mood_description] | [music_description]

We have all kinds of euphemisms when we wish to be polite about a delicate subject. Things like “In a family way” for shes pregnant.  Then there are all the other body functions that mother taught us not to say in public, which included her.  Number one and number two were on the list in our house.

Roll Eyes

The euphemisms for sex are endless and people get real inventive when dealing with that subject.

Slap Head

What would we ever do if we could not use our euphemisms? What

The government has been at this since they re-named the War Department the Defense Department. Back in the early seventies, I started a dictionary of ‘newspeak’. It is of some interest to me that the government now has apparently banned the word “problem” from their press releases. No more problems. We have ‘challenges” and we have “issues” but our problems are gone.

I know some people hate euphemisms - “just call it what it is” they say - but I usually love the principle of creative use of language.

Yeah they do know how to “white wash” those problems don’t they. Or is it actually “side stepping” the issues lol.

Usually for pregnancy it’s “knocked up” or “she’s got a bun in the oven”.

Euphemisms are often more crass than just saying what one means.
