It Took the BBC To Explain It

Written on January 30th, 2010

It to the BBC News to explain to me why poor Americans vote against their own self interest.

The article is worth reading.

I have to think about this but it seems to make sense.

good article. this is something I’ve been thinking about lately. In addition to what the writer mentions, I think alot of lower income americans, especially those on the right, have a false perception of affluence. They seem to think a new tax regime would bankrupt them, when in reality, it would not affect them at all. Or minimally. It’s delusional.

This article is so on the mark. The health care reform debate has been won by the people peddling anger and misinformation. Meanwhile the people who are trying to reform things are standing around expecting people to see through the lies and think rationally. Unfortunately people don’t think rationally when they vote, or support politicians. They seem to slip into a sports style rah rah mode, where winning becomes more important than doing what is morally correct.

Like them or not this is why the labor unions were very useful. It help them too understand in a context that affected their lives. They felt united with one another against the big and the powerful. They got a say without feeling stupid or talked down too.
